John French trained in molecular medicine and oxygen radical biochemistry in Christchurch, Adelaide and London (where he undertook a Wellcome Trust funded post doc in Molecular Medicine). His clinical training was largely in Auckland (NZ), where he was consultant cardiologist at Green Lane Hospital from 1992-2003, though he continued molecular genetic research in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and established a genetic cardiology clinic. Since January 2004 John French, an interventional cardiologist, has been Director of Cardiac Research at worked st Liverpool Hospital NSW, though retired from clinical work in September 2025, though remaining an HMO. He has also been a VMO at Wagga Wagga (WW) Base Hospital since 2004. and has undertaken private practice in WW and SW Sydney.
